Hockey galore at City Park

All roads lead to City Park for the final pool matches and the finals of the Vaisakhi International tournment.

The final pool matches are to be played on Friday -22nd to Saturday 23rd April while the semi-final and final matches are slotted for the 24th and 25th. Friday sees old rivalries renewed with Orange taking on Sliders at 2:00 pm. Sliders will be hoping to avoid a repeat of the 4 – 0 drubbing they received from Orange during a league match a fortnight ago.

“We were a bit lax in the midfield and our flanks failed to function as a unit during our last encounter’ says Slider Skipper. ” Our strikers were also a bit lax but we’ve worked on this. The 4 – 0 defeat was the worst ever result we recorded and we’re determined to give Orange a run for their money this time”.

Orange has however expressed confidence a head of the tie, while being careful not to under-estimate their opponents. Orange Team Manager Jane Nyamogo says despite getting the better of Sliders in the league match, “We know they have noted their weaknesses from the league matche and trained well. We’re not taking any chances. We’ll go full out and fight for a win.”

Players to watch in this match include Anita, Awuor, Lynnete and Wachira for Sliders and Orange’s Jackline Mwangi, Pristine Nyeri, Tioni and Barbra Simiyu. Orange goalkeepers Josphine Ataro and Cynthia could also prove decisive in this match.

Orange, who face Vikings, an equally tough team on Saturday morning at 10 am,  is yet to loose a match in any competition to a local team in over 3 years.

An institutions derby is also set to roll in the Men’s Pool A encounter pitting (Kenya College of Acountancy) KCA and Kenya Polytechnic. Both teams have played against Kenya police, loosing 5 – 1 and 9 -0 respectively. Kenya Polytechnic has also played against Multimedia University in a match that ended in a 3 – 3 draw.

A win for Kenya Poly would most certainly guarantee them a place in the semi finals alongside Kenya Police. KCA however, start as firm favorites to win the tie.

Saturday sees another classic clash in the Men’s pool B with premier league champions Strathmore taking on Nairobi Simba. Strathmore will be out to regain lost pride after Simba defeated them in their last encounter during the KHU floodlights tournament. Simba on the other hand will be tightening their defenses after suffering a shock 3 – 0 loss in the league barely 2 weeks ago.

“The team is ready and we’re all looking forwad to a good game on Saturday a 4 pm.” Said Strathmore Captain Allan Iningu. “Talk is cheap, let us play.”

Other matches to watch for are the Strathmore ladies vs Vikings on Friday at 4:00 pm and Strathmore ladies vs Slides on Sunday at 10:00 am.

Also on the cards thsi weekend is the Uganda Hockey Association Easter Invitational Tournament to be held in Kampala, Uganda.

Weekend matches: Friday – KCA vs Kenya Poly (10:00 a), Kenya Police vs Multimedia Univ (12:00 pm), Orange vs Sliders (2:00 pm), Strathmore ladies vs Vikings (4:00pm), Strathmore men vs Karate (6:00 pm). Saturday – Orange vs Vikings (10:00 pm), KCA vs Multimedia Univ (12:00 pm), Karate Axion vs Parklands (2:00 pm), Strathmore men vs Nairbi Simba (4:00 pm). Sunday – Strathmore ladies vs Vikings (10:00 am).

Champions startled as KHU league shapes up

Kenya Hockey Mens defending champions Strathmore were held to a 3 – 3 draw by a resurgent KCA-U, barely 7 days after adding the 2011 Kenyan universities trophy to their cabinet.

KCA dominated the early stages of the game and could have been two goals up by the 20th minute were it not for some great goalkeeping by Strathmore keeper, Sang. Strathmore strikers George Mutira and Davis Wanangwe on the other hand capitalized on laxity of the KCA defence to give the champions a 2 – 0 half time lead.

Strathmore was again on-point in the second half when Francis Eshikuri added a third goal in the 54th minute. The goal was however hotly contested by KCA who felt that it was scored from outside the D-Area.

That was as much dominance as the champions would have, KCA regrouped and pulled one back within 2 minutes, and were back at it again 10 minutes latter with a well executed field goal by Sammy Namonyo to put the scores at 3- 2 with 4 minutes left. The strathmore defense buckled after continuous pressure from KCA, gifting the students the all important equalizer in the 68th minute to settle the match at 3 – 3. The equalizing goal was scored by Jacob Githinji.

The University of Nairobi (UoN) and runner-up Kenya Police were also on a goal scoring spree with UoN hammering National Youth Service (NYS) 9 – 0 and Kenya Police dismissing new-comers Karate Axiom 6 – 1.  Moses Cheplait, Richard Birir,  Sam Oungo, James Munyi, Nelson Ochieng and Olive Echenje scored the goals for Kenya Police. Karate got the consolation goal through Stanlaus Wepondi.

In the KHU national league, Daystar University continued their poor run in the league, loosing 1 – 0 to new comers Multimedia University. Duke Ontiro scored the all important goal in the 53rd minute.

USIU-A also collected three vital points in the KHU National Womens League by defeating Virgin Vikings by 1 goal to nothing. Veteran Lorriane Nondi scored the lone goal in the first half. The win pushed USIU-A to 4th sport behind leaders Orange Telkom, Sliders and Strathmore Ladies. All the top 4 teams in the ladies league have 3 points, separated by goal difference.

March 21, 2011… NOCK Kenya floodlights hockey tournament winners Nairobi Simba extended their reign at the top of the KHU mens premier league table by getting a second win in as many matches this past weekend.

Nairobi Simba edged out old-timers Wazalendo by 1 – 0 in a tightly contested match on Sunday evening. The match was marred by complaints from both teams on poor officiating, and had to be stopped for 10 minutes when Wazalendo players threatened to walk out of the pitch in protest. This followed a contested call by one of the match officials, giving Nairobi Simba a penalty flick on the grounds that a Wazalendo player, Limo*, had blocked a goal bound ball with a ‘back-stick’.

The Wazalendo players latter agreed to have the flick taken and, much to their relief, veteran goal keeper James Owiti blocked the penalty flick. The tense match then went on to completion without any incidences. Simba stalwart Inderjit Matharu scored the loan goal in the 39th minute through a short corner.

This was the second successive loss for Wazalendo after having lost to Green Sharks the previous weekend. This leaves Wazalendo rooted at the bottom 4 of the KHU mens premier league table.

Earlier on, Greensharks had battled to a narrow 3 – 2 win over USIU-A in another tightly contested KHU premier league match. This was the second win for the Sharks and the second loss for the students in as many matches.

The self-sponsored club had trailed the students for much of the match and was forced to come from 2 – 1 down to level and get the winning goal after a momentary lapse of concentration by the USIU-A side. Kevin Simuyu opened the scores for the Sharks in the 28th minute but USIU-A’s Caleb Mutere quickly canceled the lead less than 5 minutes latter. Caleb was on point once again a minute before half time, giving the students a 2 – 1 half time lead.

However, Greensharks attacking duo of Leon Magomere and Wachira did not relent in their pursuit for an equalizer. They were rewarded after Leon got the equalized 22 minutes into the second half and substitute Frank Omondi netted the winner 3 minutes latter.

The first match on Sunday saw league returnees Nakuru Athletic Club making minced meat of debutants Multi-media University by drubbing them 3 goals to nothing. Multimedia University however gave a good account of themselves, creating several scoring chances but failing to capitalize.

Saturday saw KCA-U hand Parkroad their second defeat of the season in a match that ended 2 – 0. The University students exerted their dominance from the start but were kept on check by the experienced Parkroad side. KCA’s Inspirational player Gordon Oduor ‘Godi’, and Bildad Namawa netted the two goals.

Parkroad lost one of its key players, Fred Omondi, to injury from a raised ball, giving the students the upper hand in the duel. The injured player was rushed to the nearby Agakhan hospital for treatment for an eye-socket fracture.

Sunday: Nairobi Simba 1 – Wazalendo 0, USIU-A 2 – Green Sharks 3, Nakuru Athletic 3 – Multimedia Uni 0

Saturday: Parkroad 0 – KCA 2, Nakuru Athletic 1 – Parklands 1

The weekend also saw hot hockey action going on in Western province as the boys and girls high schools battled for a chance to represent the province in next months hockey national school games.

Breaking news – Strathmore retains KHU league title

City Park, Nairobi  31/10/2010 – Strathmore University Gladiators have successfully retained the Kenya Hockey Union mens premier league trophy. In a classic universities derby, the Gladiators put 4 goals past KCA University to get the goal difference advantage over second-time runner up Kenya Police.

Strathmore and Kenya Police were tied on points and the students needed at least 4 goals and a win to retain the title. They got both.

Last seasons finals saw Kenya Police loose to Strathmore by 2 – 1 in a play-off format that was scrapped off after protests from the law enforcers.

KCA now seems likely to finish in a respectable 4th position, given that this is their maiden league appearance.

Telkom Orange has already retained its womens national league title too.

Other weekend matches: Kisumu Simba 0 – 1 Nairobi Simba. Sliders 0 – 0 Virgin Vikings.

Orange survive to beat Strathmore as Sharks fail to impress again

Africa champions Orange Ladies have all but sealed their 11th consecutive Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) title. With an impressive 15 point gap between the champions and the second placed team USIU-A ladies, Orange now have all their eyes set for the upcoming Africa Club Cup championship in December in Accra, Ghana.

The champions were however made to sweat for a narrow 3 -2 win over league debutants Strathmore University Scorpions. The fast paced match played at City Park Nairobi was all set for a 2 – 2 all draw before Orange scored the wining goal on the 70th minute. Betty Tioni opened the scoring in the 10 minute before Jacky Ogot added a second 15 minutes latter. However, strathmore’s Norah Kijala rallied the students to a 2 all draw by scoring two brilliant goals. Tioni later rescued the Orange ladies with a last minute goal, second before the final whistle.

The mens premier league got the excitement it needed with the two main title contenders in action. Kenya Police played their last game against last years semi-finalists Green Sharks while champions Strathmore Gladiators were away to Western Jaguars in Kakamega. The Sharks failed to impress a second time by losing their second match in as many weeks. Police won 1 – 0 against an uncoordinated Sharks side.  Strathmore continued to pile pressure on the cops by pumping 6 goals past their harpless hosts. Jaguars got a consolation goal to end the game 6 -1 in favour of Strathmore.

Other matches saw waning giants Kisumu Simba loose its 2 weekend matches against Parkroad and Wazalendo by a 1 – 0 margin in both games. Hosts mombasa also won USIU-A ladies 2 – 0 as the USIU-A men also slumped to a 2 – 0 defeat by Mvita IX. The national mens league saw Mombasa SC loose by 1 – 0 to visiting Barbarians.

The league resumes next week.
